Loading Dock Maintenance Tips

Loading docks take a beating with foot traffic, heavy equipment and during the winter, the environmental elements.

Keeping loading docks properly maintained will lead to smoother operations and a reduction in health and safety hazards. As with any equipment maintenance, refer to your owner’s manual for any specifics and use common sense for when maintenance should be performed, such as squeaking and grinding noises.

LUBRICATION

There are a number of areas in loading docks which should be regularly checked to assure they are properly lubricated. Dock leveler hinges and hinge pins should be lubricated about every three months with penetrating oil, along with the full width of the deck.

5810 ULTRA TAC High Pressure Penetrating Lubricant dispenses as an oil-like lubricant designed to penetrate and lubricate.  It then sets up as a viscous, high impact grease to add protection and heavy lubrication to keep things running smoothly.

It contains PTFE which remains on the surface, leaving a protective coating. It is ideal for also spraying the lube chain, which is recommended annually.

The door springs can be lubricated as needed with 5451 BREACH Super Penetrant as it is excellent at seeping into crevices and tight spaces to displace moisture and prevent corrosion.

MAINTENANCE

Dirt, dust and debris can all interfere with the optimum operation of a loading dock door and the warehouse floor.  Clean the hardware and tracks regularly, as well as the surrounding area.

2640 ZIP Citrus Cleaner and Degreaser is a good general purpose cleaner for loading dock areas as it can be used on the full range of surfaces including walls, floors, and exterior doors.  It contains corrosion inhibitors for safe cleaning of metal surfaces.

Rubber dock bumpers should be checked for wear and tear, and replaced as needed as they play an important role in preventing damage to the concrete wall, the dock leveler and the trailer restraint. Prolong their life by preventing cracking and hardening from the elements with 8540 PROTEK Vinyl and Rubber Protectant.

During winter months, treat snow removal equipment with 2155 BACK DOWN All Season Surface Repellent to prevent the build-up of snow and slush and aid in easier clearing of access points.

Got rust? 5960 REVIVE Rust Converter Spray is a quick and convenient way to treat rusted surfaces as it chemically converts the rust to an inert black polymer-based coating to prevent future rust from forming. It eliminates the need to brush, sandblast or scrape before painting
