We can all agree on the most obvious sources of temporary restroom malodors, however don’t overlook other sources of offensive smells, particularly those which linger such as ammonia, mold and odors from sewer gas.
These types of lingering odors need special attention:
URINE:
It’s not the urine, but the bacteria that feed on it when it ends up on the floor by splashing or bad aim. The urine then dries, providing food for the bacteria found on surfaces leading to more bacteria and odors.
Solution: Eliminate the food source for the bacteria by using an enzyme-bacterial product to destroy the odor source such as 2960 DIGEST PLUS Enzyme Producing Non-Pathogenic Bacteria. SEWER GAS:
Unused drains will create odors when the P-Trap dries out and allows sewer gas to back up into the restroom.
Solution: Run water to fill the P-Trap and if drain is seldom used, run water regularly.
TRASH/SANITARY RECEPTACLES:
Cleaning sanitary receptacles is perhaps the most disliked job in restroom maintenance. In addition to harboring bacteria and mold, there is the odor which emanates from these containers.
Solution: Disinfect containers each time the liners are changed. 3570 ENCORE PLUS is a one-step RTU disinfectant which cleans, disinfects and deodorizes.
For ongoing odor control, spray 3770 FIESTA CUCUMBER MELON Jelled Deodorant inside the receptacle lids. It converts to a clinging jell which slowly releases fragrance for an extended period of time as it evaporates. Also available are jelled deodorants in Citrus and Mulberry scents.
DRAINS:
A slow-running drain can create malodors and is an indicator of build-up in the pipes, most likely from fats, oils, grease and/or hair.
Solution: Keep drains running smoothly by regularly using 2900 DRAIN DEMON Thick Organic Waste Eliminator. It contains seven strains of non-toxic bacteria which provide ongoing break-down of organic build-up, grease and food by-products in drains. The thick formulation clings to the sides of pipes and drain lines.
