Lice and Bed Bugs in Schools

Some refer to schools as a breeding ground for germs. They can also be a breeding ground for unwelcome attendees such as lice and bed bugs.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, it is estimated that 6-12 million head lice infestations occur each year, primarily among school age children between 3-11 years old.

Although primarily spread by direct contact with an infested person, lice can also be spread by contact with hats, coats, or fabric as they can live one to two days after falling off their host.

Bed bugs are notorious hitch-hikers as they attach themselves to bags and clothing. They are also very good at hiding and once they become embedded in a dark, small space they reproduce rapidly.

With students returning to school after vacation time, it increases the chance of a bed bug infestation through the transfer on backpacks. Just ask the maintenance crew at Thornwood High School outside Chicago.

Earlier this year when students returned from winter break travels, they experienced a bed bug infestation which took months to eradicate.
